Photophobia

Photophobia is called the ocular condition associated with the eye sensitivity to light. It usually occurs in middle childhood with an experience of pain and discomfort of the eyes to light exposure.  Most times has an idiopathic character.

The basic characteristic of is that the eye or even parts of it, are attacked by white corpuscles of the organism itself leading to intense and systematically ophthalmologic symptoms.

Symptoms

  • Eye’s hypersensitivity to sunlight and any direct or indirect light source
  • Eye pain
  • Dizziness and headache

 

Cause

  • Light –Colored eyes and skin
  • Large pupils.Pupil is the black portion of our eye that regulates the amount of light entering our eyes
  • Small stimulation of photoreceptors of the retina
  • Taking pharmaceutical drugs, e.g. sedatives
  • Eye injury
  • Allergies, inflammations, infections or eye diseases (conjunctivitis, keratitis, corneal dystrophy, etc.)
  • Infectious diseases (meningitis, measles)
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Encephalitis and migraines
